As someone who works in wellbeing and education with early childhood years books like this are really exciting and rare. A great deal of wellbeing related material is talk-based and doesn't get out of the head much. Unless our approaches to wellbeing include our bodies we're missing out on something important. The Grateful Giraffe is really engaging and fun with small children. Whole classes enjoy the quality illustration, the interesting animals and the movements that you can learn as you go. The Grateful Giraffe also helps enhance a child's emotional literacy which really helps them to communicate their experience which is important and hard to do when you're having hard-to-have feelings. That helps children to learn how to self-regulate and to grow in empathy together within a classroom. Great book!

Another well-crafted adventure by Giselle Shardlow, this is a book about emotions that connects feelings, animals, and yoga all together. Through these beautiful illustrations by Valerie Bouthyette, young children learn to identify and validate various feelings, as they are introduced to animals from around the world. My favorite animal, being the “proud peacock.” As always, the connecting yoga poses are highlighted neatly in a circle close by. There is also a guide to each of the poses in the back of the book, along with a parent-teacher guide to maximize learning potential.

Brain research shows that we learn best through physical activity.' I'm totally with that idea. I'm Japanese in Tokyo and can communicate in English like a native English speaker. I've never lived overseas or studied at any international schools. But I played with American kids who lived near an American air base in Tokyo. Then, I picked up my American English ' through physical activity'. Based on my own experience, I'm teaching yoga in English to kids in Japan. With a story that's easy to understand and beautiful illustration, I'm sure the book will help me to spark joy and love with my students.

The Grateful Giraffe is an interactive book that allows children to learn about different animals from around the world and how to express their feelings through yoga poses. As an elementary school teacher, I use yoga in the primary classroom and have a lunch hour club for pre-teens and teens. The text is minimal, but I use the illustrations for inspiration to teach my students a little bit about each animal, their country of origin/habitat, depending on age level and attention span. There is a how-to guide at the back of the book that explains each pose (and a list with each animal, country, flag and pose) for those who are new to the practice of yoga. This book teaches children to identify feelings and express themselves with their bodies; it also teaches children that negative feelings are normal, but we need to learn to control them. Yoga is the perfect way to teach children about self-regulation and the importance of always being in control of their feelings. The Grateful Giraffe does not have a storyline, but allows for lots of discussion and movement. A fun book to explore different animals, feelings and movement!
