Emily's Day in the Desert
Learn about the desert through movement and story!
Join Emily as she spends a day with her parents in Death Valley, California. Glide like a hawk, dart like a fox, and slither like a snake.
This desert yoga book includes a list of yoga poses for kids and a parent-teacher guide.
Unique book. I like that Emily was prepared for her trip with her parents. She had a list of things she was hoping to see. It would be more helpful if there were opening, games, breath work and music suggestions to help use this book as a theme but to be able to make it a 45 minute class.
Yay for Emily's Day in the Desert! As a children & family yoga teacher it is great to see a book that unites storytelling, yoga, & learning and also has diverse characters. I work in Chicago with inner-city children & families and it is always nice when I can find or recommend a resource that my students can see themselves in. My students had so much fun going on the desert adventure with Emily & searching for the roadrunner on each page! I also love the variety of poses in this book; Giselle takes you through standing poses, balance, seated and ends with a lovely breathing exercise before the final resting pose. The resources at the end of the book are perfect for parent or teacher to review the pose list, animal names, learn more in-depth instructions for moving your body into the poses and delving deeper into yogic principals or breath, body awareness, & meditation.
Giselle Shardlow's story incorporates the desert biome with yoga moves. This very engaging story is about a little girl and her family exploring the desert. Being from the Northeast, I thought this book gave my daughter an idea about this habitat. The illustrations and story are realistic. Besides using it at home, as a Primary Montessori teacher, this book is perfect for an introduction to the desert. Highly recommend for teachers and parents!
This is an awesome kids yoga book!!!! Highly recommended it!
This is an engaging story matched with fun yoga poses. My students loved copying the movements during the story and later without the story. Having a digital copy allowed me to save a copy of the book in iBooks and project it onto the screen for all the children to see clearly.
